The bridging visa travel trap

If you apply for a partner visa onshore, you're usually placed on a Bridging Visa A (BVA) that lets you stay in Australia while your application is processed. So far so good.

The trap

A BVA does not let you travel. If you leave Australia on a BVA, it can cease — and you may not be able to return while your application is being processed.

What you need before travelling

If you might need to leave (a family emergency, a wedding, work), you generally need to apply for and be granted a Bridging Visa B (BVB) before you go. A BVB gives you a set travel window and lets you re-enter.

The mistake people make is booking flights first and discovering the rule second.

Takeaway: On a BVA, sort out a BVB before you book any overseas travel.
