The four pillars of partner visa evidence
The Department weighs your relationship across four areas:
- Financial — how you share money and responsibility.
- Household — how you run a life and home together.
- Social — how others recognise you as a couple.
- Commitment — your history, plans and dedication to a shared life.
You don't need them equal
Real relationships are lopsided. Some couples are finance-heavy and social-light; others the reverse. You don't need identical evidence in each pillar.
But don't leave one blank
What raises questions is a pillar that's simply empty. If an area is naturally thin for your circumstances — say you've only recently moved in together — explain it in a line or two rather than leaving the officer to guess.
A quick self-check
Before lodging, ask: does each of the four areas have at least a couple of solid pieces, and have I explained any that are light? If yes, you've covered the structure the assessment is built on.
Takeaway: Cover all four pillars, accept they'll be uneven, and explain the thin ones.
