The partner visa second stage (820 → 801)
Apply onshore and you lodge once, but it's assessed in two stages: the temporary 820 first, then the permanent 801.
When the 801 happens
The permanent 801 is generally assessed around two years after you first lodged. Your relationship has to still be genuine and continuing then — not just at the original lodgement.
What people forget
The second stage needs fresh evidence covering the time since you applied. Couples who stop gathering documents the day they lodge end up scrambling two years later.
The easy fix
Keep adding to your evidence over those two years — the same four areas, just continued: new leases, ongoing shared finances, more photos and trips, updated statements. When the 801 stage arrives, you'll have it ready.
Takeaway: The 820 isn't the finish line. Keep your evidence growing for the 801.
